Annual Lecture on the ethics of assisted dying
Our 2025 Annual lecture will be delivered by Theodore Dalrymple, a distinguished retired psychiatrist and prison physician whose career has given him a uniquely informed view of one of our era’s most complex ethical debates.
In this thought-provoking lecture Dalrymple will explore the huge moral questions surrounding end-of-life care, including the competing claims of individual choice, medical ethics, and the attitudes of society. His perspective, shaped by real-world encounters with suffering and death, promises to give us all plenty to think about.
A senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and contributing editor of City Journal, Theodore Dalrymple has spent decades at the intersection of medicine, human psychology, and moral philosophy. His work has taken him to Africa, London’s East End and Birmingham. He has written extensively about the human condition, both as the author of a number of books and as a contributor to a wide variety of newspapers and journals. He is currently the Medical Editor of The Oldie. He brings both clinical experience and philosophical depth to this sensitive topic.
Given the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at the House of Lords legislative stage, this is essential viewing for anyone grappling with these difficult questions—whether professionally or personally.
The Lecture will take place on Tuesday 22 October at Alton Maltings. More information and tickets can be found here: https://cardiachealth.org.uk/events/annual-lecture-25/
